You might get random restarts and freezes, or even see strange colors and glitchy graphics when trying to render 3D environments. This will cause problems with your computer around 3D and other GPU-related tasks. The only thing you really need to worry about is whether your GPU is getting too hot. Remember, it's perfectly normal for your GPU to heat up under load, and for the fans to ramp up considerably to deal with it. There's not a lot you can do about a hot GPU beyond avoiding activities that use your GPU. Not all Macs have a dedicated graphics processor, particularly lower-end notebooks like the MacBook Air and 13" MacBook Pro. This includes activities like playing 3D games, rendering video, manipulating 3D objects in apps like Photoshop or Blender, and using some web technologies like WebGL. GPUs are designed with different workloads in mind, and can offer a huge boost in performance when it comes to 3D and 2D rendering. And yes, to your orginal question, smcFanControl works well and should not harm your computer, and indeed as it allows a lower fan speed setting, it could conceivably have less wear and tear on the hardware. A replacement fan is cheep to replace anyway compaired to the other bits and peices the fans are keeping cool. After this delete the icon for fan control in the system preferences pane if it is still there. The fan sppeds you have set are not excessive (well below tolerance) and they shouldn't 'wear out', iF that's your concern. Click the 'PWM Mode' options and make sure they're all set to 'MANUAL' using the dropdown at the bottom of the window. Click the 'Chip' dropdown and choose your motherboard chipset from the list. Click the Configure button and head to the Advanced tab. Then go to: Macintosh HD > Library > Startup Items and delete 'Fan COntrol Daemon or something similar. Let's start playing with some fan controls. Fan Control lets you set a new minimum speed, lower threshold, and upper threshold and shows you the graph, i.e. Download smcFanControl for Mac to control fans of your intel mac to cool it down, monitor temp. It also adds (yet another) menu bar item. If I stop this service the fans continue to run when Windows puts the monitor into sleep. While the CPU deals with the vast majority of computing tasks, the Graphical Processing Unit (GPU) handles the more visual tasks. Go into Macintosh HD (or what you called it) > Library > Preference Panes and delete fan control. According to the FAQ, if you use smcFanControl to set a new minimum speed, your fan speed will still get a boost when the CPU load gets higher. Michael Barton Heine Jr What to Know Determine what kind of CPU you have and what kind of connector (3-pin, 4-pin, etc.) it uses. All it does is raise the minimum fan speed, and leaves the rest of Apple's fan speed controlling algorithm intact. There are two options for adjusting fan speed in Fan Control.
